Welcome to Keep Australia Colourful!

keepozcolourfullogosmall

Keep Australia Colourful is a campaign developed by Graffiti Artists and lovers of Graffiti in response to the NSW State Government's ‘Graffiti Action Day’. On May 2nd 2010, the State Government plans to reduce graffiti by painting over as much as they can and encouraging community groups, schools and local businesses to get involved.

On the same day, we will be standing up for Graffiti as a form of art and culture. The government wants to ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’ by painting our streets, lanes and public spaces various shades of beige – but we want to Keep Australia Colourful!

It’s time that we stood up collectively for Graffiti as a form of art, to dispel the myth that graf = crime, and to show how our city could look if there were more places for artists to create pieces legally.

Stay tuned for more info on how you can be involved…

Graffiti Action Day This Weekend ... and KAC is Back!

Posted by KACAdmin

keepozcolourfullogotiny

Graffiti Action Day is on again this weekend! So KAC is back in action. Below I've posted a copy of the announcement we are sending around to our lists, calling on people to get out there and support KAC anyway you can as we continue to Keep Australia Colourful.

Cheers,

KACAdmin

[**please circulate this message as widely as possible**]

On May 15, Keep Australia Beautiful is teaming up with the NSW State Government for their second 'Graffiti Action Day'. Their aim is to mobilise volunteers all over the state to paint over as much graffiti as they can.

On the same day, we urge you to join us and take a stand on behalf of Graffiti and Street Art as valuable forms of art and culture. The government wants to 'Keep Australia Beautiful' by painting our streets, lanes and public spaces various shades of beige - but we want to Keep Australia Colourful! Let's show people how great our cities could look if there were more places for artists to create pieces legally.

If you want to join us, here's what to do...

Graffiti/Street Artists: find a space, and make it look colouful on May 15.

Whatever you decide to paint, poster, stencil, knit, sticker ... be sure to include a reference to Keep Australia Colourful in your piece. Yes, people ... you can put aside your ego for one day and join the KAC crew, we know you can do it!! :-)  Of course, we are not encouraging you to do anything illegal! Then, upload your flicks on our website:

http://www.keepaustraliacolourful.org/

If you can tell us where you are going to be painting beforehand, even better - we can plug your session on the website/facebook too. And if you want to be available for media comment on the day, send us your details, and we will add them to our press release.

Graffit/Street Art Lovers: write a letter to your local council, and/or to the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , telling them why you love graffiti and street art and why you want to see more of it.

KAC in Surry Hills

By KACAdmin

KAC_LOGO_Foveau_10

As a part of Keep Australia Colourful's events of May the 2nd, SAYNT pulled together a crew including himself, BEASTMAN, NUMSKULL and ROACH to redo a wall in Foveau St Surry Hills, right near the intersection with Crown St. The high profile position in this gentrified suburb of terrace houses caught the attention of quite a few passers-by (including a few journalists!) as the guys did their thing.

Legal Walls Work

By Kurt and Cameron

Rydalmere_Nth_1_10

For years, legal graffiti walls have existed alongside other more punitive responses to graffiti. Now, thanks to the efforts of some reactionary politicians working in cahoots with the growing anti-graffiti industry, legal walls are under threat. Many have been closed down, and even more are on the chopping block, on the grounds that they don't work. So, here's our defence of legal walls and why they do work...

New NSW AG's tough stance

News image

New Attorney-General signals tough stance on graffiti ... again! By Cameron McAuliffe The new NSW State Liberal government has come out punching against graffiti with the new Attorney-General, Greg Smith, signalling a tougher stance on young people charged with graffiti offences. An article in the Sydney Morning Herald last week noted that the new push would see young people more likely to be brought directly before the courts to face custodial sentences rather than proceeding through youth ...

Whoops! Can’t Bank on Banksy

News image

Whoops! Can’t Bank on Banksy by Cameron McAuliffe   Whether you love him or you hate him, there’s no denying Banksy has carved a space for graffiti and street art in the minds of politicians. Particularly in Melbourne, where a visit by Bansky a few years back further increased the profile of the inner-Melbourne laneways.   In 2008, a media outcry occurred when ‘vandals’ tipped paint over the perspex screen protecting a Melbourne Banksy, the little diver. Now, on the ...

Note to Stephen Conroy

News image

Note to Stephen Conroy: graffiti writers are not paedophiles or terrorists By Kurt Iveson. As some of you may be aware, the Commonwealth Government is thinking about introducing a mandatory filter to the internet in Australia. This would mean that it would block access to certain ‘black-listed’ websites, as determined by the Censorship Board. As you can imagine, this has caused quite a debate about government censorship. Where exactly will the Government draw the line? What kinds of ...

OFarrell to graffiti writers: catch the train!

O’Farrell to graffiti writers: catch the train! By Kurt Iveson   At the beginning of 2009, NSW Opposition justice spokesperson Greg Smith promised that the Coalition would refrain from engaging in a ‘law and order auction’ in the lead up to the next NSW State Election. He argued that these auctions – in which each party tries to outbid each other in a competition to look the toughest on crime – have failed to actually address the causes ...
